Ultrasound II

by Olive Smith

Ultrasound II is a series of scans I made during the exploration of the biomaterial SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast). SCOBY is a biomaterial produced when brewing kombucha which can be dried out to create a leathery material. Whilst it is brewing the ‘mother’ SCOBY reproduces to make another SCOBY. I became fascinated with observing this process, which brought into my mind questions surrounding the womb and our complex relationship with the reproductive process, filled with misconceptions and mysteries that women experience when they are pregnant. These works explore narratives and constructs of the womb which define societal ideas surrounding the female reproductive organ.
